Frequently Asked Questions

Do you provide live online video piano lessons?

Yes, as well as in person lessons – provided you have a reliable internet connection, a suitable piano/keyboard and a device that supports WhatsApp, Facetime or Zoom, we are good to go!

What kind of music do you teach?

Predominately I teach classical music but alongside we explore all styles, including pop and jazz.  I  will also arrange simplified versions of songs on request if suitable.  I am always open to suggestions as well.

Do I have to do exams?

No – I have many pupils who choose not to take exams and who progress brilliantly.  It is entirely up to you the student if you want to take exams.  If you do choose to take an examination, I offer ABRSM or LCM for face to face exams or MTB for online examination.  All examination boards are validated by OFQUAL and are of equal merit, so we choose the syllabus most suited to the pupil’s style and interest.

What is the best age to start?

I teach from 6 – 96 years old!  It really is never too old to learn to play.  It requires practise and a willingness to learn.

Will I learn to read music?

Learning to read music is part and parcel of my approach to teaching piano.  I want my students to have the knowledge, technique and ability to play the music they want independently.

Do I need a piano?

Yes - you will need a piano, a digital piano or a keyboard with touch sensitive weighted keys, which is ideally full sized at 88 keys.

How much should I practise?

Young children starting out will need support to practise 10 – 20 minutes 4 or 5 times a week.  For older children and adults it is all about regular practise that becomes a habit.  I have found it useful to practise at the same time each day so that it fits in with your routine.

How much do the lessons cost?

Lessons are charged pro rata at £17 per half hour, payable monthly in advance. Please see terms and conditions for more details.
